Grades K-12

The longstanding belief that the suicide rate increases during the holidays is in fact….MYTH!  The CDC reports that the suicide rate is, in fact, at its lowest in December, but peaks in the spring.

Unfortunately the perception that youth suicides are increasing is not a myth.  In this 90-minute webinar, School Crisis Response Expert Vaughn Baker will explore the myths and realities surrounding the rise in teen suicide.  He will discuss the types of students who may be at risk for suicidal thoughts or behaviors.  He will guide attendees through statistics related to suicide attempts to help them better recognize opportunities to intervene and save lives.

WEBINAR HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE:

  • Multi-faceted prevention/awareness approach (schoolwide, parent/community and students)
  • Risk factors vs. warning signs
  • Identify at-risk students using the 5 F.A.C.T.S. characteristics
  • Connecting with key community-based resources
  • Action steps when all else fails

Information related to suicidal ideation, bullying/cyberbullying, risk factors for teen suicide and warning signs for suicide will be discussed in detail.  Additionally teacher-, counselor- and administrator-specific response strategies will be discussed as well as how to establish a mitigation plan for at-risk students.
A few facts about youth suicide:

  • Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death for youths ages 10-24 – more than cancer, heart disease, AIDS, birth defects, stroke, pneumonia and flu COMBINED.
  • In 2013 more than 157,000 youth between the ages of 10-24 were hospitalized for self-inflicted injuries.
  • 8% of high school students reported having attempted suicide one or more times in the previous 12-month period; another 8% reported seriously considering it.
  • For every death by suicide, at least 6 other people are intimately affected.
  • “Gifted” students, boys, LGBT students and Native Americans are in high-risk categories for suicide thoughts and suicide behavior.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • Understand the tragic issue of youth suicide, the risk factors that can lead to suicide, and the prevention of suicidal ideation and behavior in youth
  • Recognize the warning signs of youth suicide in order to help teens to identify and get help for their peers who may be at risk
  • Identify response role and strategies based on attendees’ roles in the education environment
  • Create a school environment of open communication and information flow

In the next 24 hours, 430 youths will be hospitalized for self-inflicted injuries, on average, and 13 will successfully commit suicide.  This webinar can help you BE THE POSITIVE CHANGE in a student’s life!
