Increasing focus on academic outcomes and the challenge of reaching at-risk students is causing educators to rethink school discipline.

Larry Thompson is an author, a former candidate for National Principal of the Year, and a well-known education thought leader who advocates a responsibility-centered approach that minimizes referrals and suspensions, while driving students to take ownership of their own behavior — and academic outcomes.

The US Departments of Education and Justice are advocating a shift in school discipline policies — primarily due to concerns about inequities involved with the administration of “exclusionary discipline.”  While the causes of those inequities are the source of some debate, almost everyone can agree that educators have a far greater opportunity for success if they can keep students, especially at-risk students, in the classroom. 

In this timely 90-minute webinar, educators will be guided through schoolwide evidence-based discipline practices which have schools reporting reductions as much as 90 percent in office referrals and almost eliminating suspensions. Larry Thompson will reveal tested strategies for defusing the most challenging moments with students, especially at-risk students. 

Because many resistant and defiant students also struggle academically, Larry will discuss strategies for keeping these students in class — so the student may grasp the material and the teacher, administrator and school may focus on exceeding academic targets. Using principles of Responsibility-Centered Discipline, attendees will learn how to move students, not only to obedience, but to actually taking ownership of their actions. Specific practices will be addressed that will help educators avoid crisis situations, defuse defiance and put resistant students on the path to academic success.
