Defusing Defiance: Keeping Students Productive in the Classroom - SINGLE USER

Grades K-12

What You Will Learn:

Student discipline situations can escalate from annoying to a full-blown crisis before an educator realizes what is happening. Teachers often avoid this situation by quickly referring students to the office. With “at-risk” students now sitting in the office or serving suspensions, the likelihood of the school meeting Common Core or other academic standards is greatly diminished.

“Level 1” students quickly take ownership of their problems and willingly work with teachers to resolve their issues. Not so with “Level 2” and “Level 3” students -- they begin to resist, deny, argue, ignore, blame and defy. Sometimes they are unable to maintain self-control. These resistant students are often unconcerned with an office referral and perhaps happy when the educator loses his or her cool – aware they can now avoid ownership of the problem and shift responsibility to the educator.

In this 90-minute webinar, National Principal of the Year candidate Larry Thompson will reveal tested strategies for working with resistant students. Because many resistant and defiant students also struggle academically, the goal is to keep the student in class – so the student can learn and the teacher, administrator and school can meet academic goals. Using principles of Responsibility-Centered Discipline, attendees will learn how to move students, not only to obedience, but to actually taking ownership of their actions. Specific practices will be addressed that will help educators avoid crisis situations, defuse defiance and put resistant students on the path to academic success.
